Johnny Depp and Prayer

I originally wrote this as a devotional speech for my speech class. I hope it encourages and challenges you!

Why is prayer important? God is omniscient, which means He knows everything, including our thoughts. Then why do we need to talk to Him? I’m going to use an illustration that hopefully will help answer that question.

You probably all have heard of Johnny Depp. For the sake of this story, let’s say I really, really like Johnny Depp, so I want to get to know him. I research online on every fansite to find out everything about him, from his favorite color to his favorite pair of sock to his favorite fast food restaurant. Now, you’re going to have to use your imagination for this next bit because I know it’s really not possible, but let’s pretend that I could even read Johnny Depp’s thoughts, and that I could know what he was doing every single second. Then I could know a lot about him: what he liked, what he disliked, who his friends were, where he liked to hang out...you get the picture. And what if Johnny Depp knew about me? What if he knew that there was someone out there named Elizabeth who knew which pair of socks were his favorite and all of his thoughts, but he never really cared about actually meeting me and talking to me. Well, we may know a lot about each other, but we wouldn’t really know each other.

While I can’t understand everything about God, and I certainly don’t want to compare myself to him, I hope you understand my point. It’s one thing to know about someone, but it’s another thing completely to have a relationship with that person. In the same way, you can know that someone—whether it be a parent, spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, or younger sibling—loves you, but it still means the world when they say, “I love you.” God desires that relationship with us even more than another human can because He is our Creator, Father, Lover, and Savior. As 1st Thessalonians 5:17 says: “pray continually.” God created us and saved us—He kept both ends of the deal because we couldn’t—and we don’t in any way deserve to be in His presence. Yet, not only has He saved us, but He has given us the opportunity through prayer to have a direct relationship with Him. That’s why prayer is so important.

Hello

Well, this is my first posting. I don't have anything fabulous or deeply thought-provoking to write about right now, but hopefully I will soon. Please feel free to comment and offer feedback (good or bad) on anything I write! :) That's all for now.
live&love,
Elizabeth
